Over thirty years
ago, a small group who met at a writers’ conference banded
together to establish the Fellowship of Christian Writers as
a means of support and encouragement. In 1998 the fellowship
became The Association of Christian Writers and gained charitable
status. |
The Association,
whose president is well-known Christian writer, Adrian Plass,
aims to advance the Christian faith by providing training and
encouragement for Christian writers both in church and secular
areas. They encourage people to see their talent as a gift from
God to be developed and perfected.
ACW runs writers’ days twice a year, occasional residential
weekend conferences and a number of local area groups meet regularly
across the UK. This March it is again running a week-long programme
of one-day workshops at the London Institute for Contemporary
Christianity. |

The Association, which has a membership of around
800, including overseas members, aims to become truly international. ‘We welcome Christian writers
whether they write fiction or non-fiction in the secular or
Christian marketplace, or for the church magazine,’ said
chairman Brian Vincent. ‘Some of our members have had
crime novels published , others fantasy fiction, plain old-fashioned
romance or children’s fiction. We provide, among other
things, a quarterly magazine, writer coordinators to give advice,
writers’ days and workshops, prayer support, manuscript
critiques, postal workshops, and competitions.’
‘We are open to all writers, the only requirement is to
sign a simple declaration of commitment to core Christian beliefs
and to pay a modest annual fee.’
