Stop the bullies
Many writers draw on childhood experiences and Scottish subscriber
Jennifer Thompson, Isle of Cumbrae, has turned her own negative experience
of bullying into a positive by writing about it for others.
She decided to re-slant her proposal for guide to stopping the bullies,
aimed at school children, that had been turned down by Picadilly Press,
and turn it into a parent’s guide.
The book Bullying – A Parent’s Guide (£8.99)
was published by Forward Press’s Need2Know imprint of guides
addressing problems in people’s everyday lives and is now selling
in bookshops and on Amazon.
‘I also hope to pen a book for adult bullying survivors but
so far the proposal has been rejected on the grounds that I am not
a life coach or psychologist,’ she explains.
‘What I have learned from my publishing experience is that no
piece of work you do is wasted. Rewriting and re-jigging, especially
book proposals, can be a pain after you’ve toiled over it, but
it can reap dividends.
‘If you have a manuscript lying dusty in a drawer that that
has been turned down by everyone, think: “Could I redraft this
to have a different slant, perhaps to a market that I’ve read
about?”
‘That’s what I did and it helped me turn what was an extremely
painful experience into something positive that I pray will help others.’ |
