Swanwick and NAWG
competition winners
In a competition sponsored by Writers'
News, the short story, A
Good Drying Day, Sheila Corbishley, Fenham, Newcastle
Upon Tyne, won her a place at the 2006 Swanwick Summer School
and a Writers' News trophy. Also provided by Writers'
News, second prize, a £100 cheque, went to Beverley
Denise Thompson, Newcastle upon Tyne, for Romance of
a Kind, and third, £25 worth of vouchers, went
to Katrina McEntegart, Edinburgh, for Finbar Flood –
Explorar.
In the competition's poetry section,for a sonnet themed around
'friendship', the first-placed entry, To
My Writing Partner, earned Maggie Cobbett, Ripon,
North Yorkshire, a week at the summer school, and a Writers'
News trophy. Joyce Reed, Marple, Stockport, received
a £100 cheque for second place with Still Missing
You, and Roger Dunn, Dartmouth, Torquay, was third, receiving
£25 worth of vouchers. All prizes were sponsored by
Writers' News.
Sigh Kick,
by Frances Gapper, Alston, Cumbria, won first place, a week
at the summer school and a trophy in the competition for
writing for children. Second placed was Brian Lux, Llandudno,
Conwy, earning a £100 cheque for Martin's War,
with Catherin Osborn, London, placed third, £25 worth
of vouchers, for The Image of Jonathan Plum. All
prizes were sponsored by Writers' News.
Norman Blake, Oxted Surrey won a free place at Durham Festival
of Writing, plus a crystal trophy, in the Writers' News/NAWG
short story competition, for his story, The Day Before
the Wedding, which will be published here shortly.
Second prize, £50, went to Aine
Chadwick, Stakeford, Northumberland, for A Place in
the Sun, with third, £25, going to Richard Hallows,
Shalstone, Buckinghamshire, for The Letter.
