The world of Charlie

Working writer and part-time creative writing tutor, Patti Hales, Birchington, Kent, an avid fan of Writers' News ‘for many years’ has to date, published over 200 short stories, features, a full-length serial and several six-part series in many UK women's magazines.

In 1995, Charlie Harper, the main character of one of these series, (originally a one-off short tale) found a path directly into the hearts of many My Weekly readers. The following year, the then fiction editor, the late Ian Sommerville, suggested that Patti try a six-parter.

‘Letters and e-mails poured in from around the globe,’ says Patti, ‘all age groups were in praise of this little five year old lad. Every reader asked for more.’

Using her many grandchildren as a resource, she carried on writing about Charlie and his family and friends, constantly expanding his small universe. Not only the six-parts, but also summer and Christmas specials. By the end of the fourth series, the letters were asking if Charlie's World would ever be available in book form? ‘I thought about it,’ says Patti, ‘but it was just too soon’.

Now, at the end of series eight, Charlie's loyal fans have what they have been asking for all these years. Charlie's World based on the first four series and some 'specials' in paperback has been published by Pen Press Publishers Ltd

Charlie’s World, £6.99, is available from Amazon, via all good bookshops, from the website: www.charlies world.pattihales.co.uk and direct from Pen Press Ltd, 39 Chesham Road, Brighton BN2 1NB.
