Lyrical venture

Although it meant taking direct responsibility for writing, production, marketing and sales of her book, and that she would have to fund it herself, Beverly Maiden was undettered in self-publishing her debut poetry collection.

She was spurred on by reading David St John Thomas's recent series of monthly articles on the topic in Writing Magazine. 'I was self-publishing for pleasure and enjoyment, for family, my friends and myself, and that was enough,' she says. 'I believed that my collection of poetry, Lyrical, written whilst in recovery from life-threatening surgery to remove a pituitary tumour at the base of the brain, would have a readily accessible market, and knowing that I would make a small loss, the venture still seemed worthwhile because it was just something I needed to do.'

But Beverly had already laid the groundwork for selling her book. 'My local bookshop had shown a desire to market my book right from the start,' she says. 'I was able to discuss discounts and pricing strategy with absolutely no commitment until we decided on a price that benefited both of us.'

The bookshop, Walter Henry's, Bideford, devoted a window display to announce the book's publication and arranged a signing session for Beverly. 'I provided cakes, savouries and soft drinks, and photographs were taken to send a follow-up report to the local papers. We were delighted to sell 25 copies, of which 50p from each sale will be donated to the Pituitary Foundation.'

Details: Lyrical (£5.99) is available from Walter Henry's Bookshop, 13-15 High Street, Bideford EX32 2AE; tel: 01237 425727.
