has been a keen writer for some time and enjoys writing
everything from articles to stories and poems. Most of this
work however remained ‘hidden out of sight and bonded
together by dust’, although she did have an article
published in This England Magazine and had a sitcom
catalogued by the BBC.
Real success however came from an unexpected medium: one
page plays. Having attended a class on the subject Joy became
enthralled with a writing form that encouraged making every
word count.
‘Even in this small framework there is room for drama,
comedy and sadness,’ she says of the discipline.
Bitten by the one page play bug she began writing short
plays for friends’ parties which she found was a hit.
She realised that such plays could be used in schools and
acting groups and began to compile an anthology.
‘Reading my monthly edition of Writers’
News I came across Pen Press Partnership Book Publishing.
I rang them, explained what I had in mind and sent them
my draft.’
This would prove to be a pivotal phone call for the hopeful
writer and it resulted in the publishing of Acting Apart
(Pen Press, £6.99).’
Pleased with the results, Joy has high praise for Pen Press,
who have been supportive all the way through the process.
