Nice for Rice

Alan Rice is a 55 year old WN subscriber from Hertfordshire who has recently taken up another pastime alongside his regular job.

‘By day I work in computers – pretty boring stuff – but by night I kill people... Well, on paper anyway.’

That’s to say he’s writing murder mystery, and has recently released his first title, Wrong Place Wrong Time, which he self published with Pen Press.

‘I had been watching the rise of self-publishing in all the journals including Writers’ News and after a lot of research into all the self-publishers out there I decided to throw in with PenPress. For me they offered the best service and are committed to helping me beyond just getting published.’

The story follows protagonist Inspector Greenwold who’s in pursuit of a murderer who kills seemingly without leaving a trace. He must unravel the connection between the victims, which includes a former colleague of his, before the killer can strike again. The book also offers readers the challenge of solving the puzzle before the Inspector does; providing them with only the same information that he receives to tackle the case.

The inspiration to write the book came from his wife Mo. After having trouble thinking one night Alan decided to write down the idea that had been keeping him awake, which Mo then suggested he turn into a book. Though this story never saw the light of day he continued to write and Wrong Place Wrong Time was created specifically for her and her love of crime novels.

Since the book’s release in February he has been busy promoting it and recently attended book signings in Berkhamsted and Hemel Hemstead. He also turned the events into an opportunity to raise money for St Francis Hospice by donating 25p for every book sold on those days. He advises other writers that they too will have to work hard at marketing in order to be successful.

‘Be prepared to work hard to publicise your book. Even if you are lucky enough to get picked up by a major publisher it is still down to you to market yourself and your book. Writing the book is only the beginning.’

Alan is now working on his next masterpiece which also features Inspector Greenwold as the protagonist. Visit his website for updates.
