Tyke Script venture

When a journalism job went ‘belly-up’ and left Bradford scribe, Mark Cantrell, with some unexpected time on his hands, he launched Tyke Script, an open-ended anthology of writing which features examples of his work.

The site www.tykescript.modblog.com makes use of the increasingly popular blog format to present his creative writing and journalism. Much of the material has been published in print journals or online over the years, whilst some material is appearing for the first time.

‘Like many writers, I am trying to build a track record and awareness of my work,’ says Mark.

He continues, ‘I am not html savvy, and didn't want to be bogged down with the constant coding for updates. I also have many strands to my writing that don't sit easily together.’

A journalist by trade, but also a novelist, short story writer and poet Mark has written ‘serious stuff’, but also off-the-wall and tongue in cheek material and it took some time before he thought of the blog format to bring it all together.

‘This format struck me as the ideal way to present my different works,’ he explains. ‘I can post a serious feature article one day, and the next I can put up a silly short story or poem. Each work is self contained, but adds to the overall body of work on display.’

Modblog allows him to provide a neatly presented site, with interactive elements (comments can be left), and he only has to focus on the words rather than worry about coding.

‘The site lets me revitalise work that would otherwise sit on file and gather dust. As well as anthologising my older works, I also intend to add new and original stuff as it develops,’ Mark says.

‘Exactly where the site will lead my words is a bit of a mystery, but it is all part of the grand adventure of writing.’
