Writers' group has internet roots

A chat on the Writers’ News website discussion area, Talkback, led to the formation of a writers’ group in Peterborough.

Forming the nucleus of the group Write At Home are Sally Bowler, Salbowl to other Talkback users, Liz ‘Lixxy’ Lennox, Tracy Baines and Stuart Mitchell, who meet on Wednesdays at Sally’s Peterborough home.

‘I’d tried before to start a writers’ group in Peterborough,’ said Sally. ‘But there was a bit of a lack of interest. When Lixxy enquired whether there was one going on in Peterborough, I thought this was a chance to start again.’

A foursome for the time being, the group has prospective members among other Talkbackers, who will attend when other commitments permit. ‘We’re a small group, but we are dedicated,’ said Sally. ‘They even requested homework. The others were worried that I wasn’t getting anything out of it, but what I’m gaining is the motivation to write – I know by next Wednesday I have to prepare something. We have quite diverse interests. Tracy’s writing a children’s book, Liz writes crime, and Stuart does short story and crime – he’s an ex-policeman so he’s handy for research purposes – and I do short stories and articles.’

‘I wanted something organised and structured, because people lose interest otherwise,’ added Sally. ‘None of us write poetry, so one week we’ll try a poem. Liz is trying a love story, and I’m attempting a crime story. We also read my work that’s been rejected, and discuss why it might have been rejected.’
