Love of Staffordshire

Self-publishing author Jean Wood channels a love of her Staffordshire home into her latest book, Through Rose Tinted Spectacles.

Jean’s fondness for Polesworth and the surrounding area has already led to titles such as Jean Wood’s Polesworth Scrapbook and A Pot Pourri of Polesworth Memories, which was reproduced in instalments to raise village society funds.

'This book is a one-to-one, it’s my take,’ she says. ‘In it I am talking to you about what has happened in the village, how things have changed, with illustrations as well.

‘It does evoke memories for people. Polesworth is a traditional Warwickshire village so of course people like to read about the way things were.

‘It’s just the sort of local interest that people love these days.’

Jean publishes her books with the help of a local printer, QD Print, Tamworth.

‘I’ve only got a typewriter so I set all the pages up, put the photographs in place and they have a young computer wizard who helps with getting it all on to the computer.’

Jean turned to self-publishing after the production (by a now defunct company) of her first children’s book, Treasure Hunt With a Ghost, was marred by typos. ‘They made such a mess of it that when I actually saw a copy, I asked them to stop, but by then it was too late.

‘The book sold out at Christmas though, and nobody noticed the mistakes!’

Details: Through Rose-Tinted Spectacles is available for (£10), from Jean Wood, 40 Bridge Street, Polesworth, Tamworth, Staffordshire B78 1DT.
