Sword and sorcery

Eagle of the Kingdom is the third and final book in the New Kingdom trilogy from WN subscriber Joanne Hall.

The three books have all been released through American indie publishers Epress (www.epressonline.com). Each is set in the fictional Hierath where the New Kingdom has formed a fragile alliance with Telesia after centuries of war. But will this peace endure and how does it concern a love-stricken fisherman’s daughter?

The first book, simply Hierath, was both a finalist in the 2007 EPPIE Awards and a nominee for the 2007 Pluto Awards. A lot of information relating to the series can be found on her website and Joanne enjoys answering e-mails relating to her work.

Having recently quit two jobs to become a full-time writer, the books have been on her mind for many years now.

‘I decided I was going to be a writer when I was six, having gone through astronaut, train driver, and Luke Skywalker’s girlfriend. I wrote the first draft of Hierath for an English project when I was fourteen and had been thinking about it for at least two years. I’ve been writing about knights and castles and feisty damsels since I was nine—the age I stopped writing about dogs.’ Outside of her work on the trilogy Joanne has had several short stories published online, many of which revolve around another series called Real Barbarian Heroes.

These comedic shorts star the egotistical and dimwitted Hoff and poke fun at the sword and sorcery genre. She is also an editor for Dark Ocean Productions, a US publisher of comics who might work with her on the series in the future.

‘The advice I can provide for other writers is a combination of advice given to me and knowledge gained from experience; learn the basics – grammar, spelling, punctuation. Invest in a good grammar guide (I use The Nuts and Bolts of Writing, by Michael Legat.)

‘These are the bricks you build your writing with. If you build a house with shoddy bricks, it’ll fall down.

‘Write every day, even if it’s only for ten minutes and you cross it all out tomorrow. If your writing is important to you, you can carve out the time to do it in no matter how busy you are. And you’ll be amazed how quickly those words build up!’

Joanne is now building up the words for a standalone prequel to the Hierath series.
